Marnie Skillings’ SS2012/13 boutique exhibition

Craving something more intimate, Marnie Skillings ditched the idea of a catwalk presentation and threw a cocktail party for her closest friends, family and fans ahead of MBFWA next week. At her Paddington boutique this evening she unveiled a series of portraits alongside her Summer 2012/13 collection of 10 inspiring women that have walked into the Bondi designer’s life. Captured by her husband Emil Vrisakis, the photographs depicted a diverse mix of women, from fellow designers Michelle Jank, Terry Biviano and Elke Kramer to musicians Julia Stone and Skarlett Saramore, actress Sophie Lee, Parlour X owner Eva Galambos, and a handful of family and friends, all wearing items from her latest collection in their own unique way.

The portraits emphasise the broad appeal of Marnie’s work; her feminine, eccentric quirk is worn as effortlessly by her demure, poised mother-in-law as her wild, young, tattooed friends. Her latest collection ‘Trait’ embodies this stylistic juxtaposition; edgy scarf print florals were cut into flirtatious cocktail dresses, jacquard brocades were given new life in polished separates and sheer black laces were spliced seamlessly into pansy printed silks. There was as always a strong presence of white lace options, the strongest incorporating a mixture cut in a masculine shaped shirt dress. Skilling’s has been in business for twelve years and it shows; she has a unique take on fashion with her own defined handwriting, allowing her to break away from the trend cycle to create pieces with a personality to match the strong women who wear them.
